Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

The thing that connected me most to the main character was being a former "gifted kid" who feels like she doesn't live up to all that she could be. Ouch is that a familiar feeling. All that potential turning into pressure. It's a little bit of a love letter to that feeling especially in the first half of the book.

The ending isn't surprising and neither are the lessons learned. But that's how life is, isn't it? We know the answers, but we live like we don't anyway blundering into the same mistakes over and over again. We've hear all the stories and have learned all the lessons, but we still somehow believe that they don't apply to us.

Life is about choices. All the consequences of our choices are unknowable. Some things are completely out of our control no matter what choices we make. Life is full of sorrow and joy. Wealth and power do not make us happy. Other people's dreams cannot fulfill us. People change. We are full of infinite possibility at every point.
