The Sign of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle
5.0

Compared to more explicit modern crime, this kind of murder mystery might seem a little tame, but for me its appeal lies in the prose and the characterisations done so well. The style has moved on a little since Study in Scarlet and Holmes is less of a stranger as is Watson. Hearing familiar London names throughout the story its easy to place yourself where they were and think how much has changed since that time. The short stories are a better way to introduce someone to Holmes and Watson as Homes is not the easiest character to get on with.
