His at Night

A fascinating book. The romance was middling and its understanding of the notion of consent was very... muddled. However. The family plot was a lot more compelling and was pretty well constructed, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It felt like the romance was more like a distraction from the good story, in a bad way. There's some really great character work in this, as well as some truly nothing character with I would have given this book one star because the consent issues..... You could argue that technically all of their encounters are consensual, but the fact that I have to use "technically" as a modifier is concerning. There's severe inebriation from one or both parties for most of them, and some of them are a specific kind of angry that does not read as sexy, just mean. Also, she expresses clear reluctance and discomfort and he is pretty coercive. That's just absolutely not my vibe for a romance novel. However, the family plot was interesting and executed well enough that I gave it another star.
