This was one of my very favorite books in elementary school, one I returned to over and over again. It felt even more poignant as an adult, to be able to clock a lot more of the mature themes.
I love the depiction of youth and adolescence and the way romantic feelings evolve at that age. I also love the complexity of the characters and how subtle she is in her characterizations of Juli and Bryce. It’s a lot of really well done showing and not telling.
The format is what always sticks with me, just so brilliant. Even though we experience the same scenes twice, it always feels fresh since you’ll uncover something new.
I think overall this has a really good message to young people about being able to see who someone is inside, not just on the outside. It also shows that, as simple as it is, how someone treats you matters.
This may be controversial (and I felt this way as a kid too) but I see a world in which Bryce and Juli could be good for one another. This book to me was the beginning, and it left us on the start of something.
