I read a lot of mixed reviews on The Interestings, and I can understand the criticisms. Mainly, this is long and dense and lacking in plot. But this is a book about complicated characters who meet as adolescents at summer camp and go on to live their messy lives in New York City from the 1970s until post 911. Wolitzer's cast of characters felt very real and honest to me. It felt like I was reading a book about real life struggles among people born a few decades before me.
