Thornhill by Pam Smy
4.0

This book was a new type of creature to me. Two stories told side by side; one through diary entries, the other through amazing black and white drawings. The diary entries tell of an orphan girl suffering from selective mutism and severe bullying at the hands of another orphan girl living in the same orphanage all while the orphanage, Thornhill, is going through the motions of closing down. The pictures tell the story of a girl in present day who moves in to the house next door to a now abandoned orphanage. She discovers a girl living in the attic of the orphanage and begins a friendship with the girl through puppets.
This story turned out to be much darker than I anticipated. But the drawings and story telling through diary entries was absolutely amazing. A wonderful book with dark undertones and a smack-you-in-the-face wake up call to the dangers of bullying. The ending left me angry in a way I didn't think a book such as this could.
