Beloved by Toni Morrison

5.0

This is not a book. This is a work of art. Beloved does a wonderful job of getting right to those emotions people hold inside and pulling them out to display in beautiful prose. The narrative itself is almost like a living mind in the way it flows between the present and the past so both seem to be happening at once. It’s an excellent storytelling device to show how our past can influence our present state and live on in our “rememory”. Most of all though, I think Beloved is a story of pain and healing. Whether it be personal tragedy, the horrors or slavery and imprisonment, or a lack/loss of identity, Beloved takes out and examines complex and difficult feelings to try and make sense of it. This is a story I think everyone should read.
