‘Blue Sisters’ was a quick read. Enjoyable and engaging enough. I enjoyed Mellors’s writing and I felt she made the three surviving sisters layered and complex. I appreciated the conflict each character dealt with, both within themselves and among one another. I really appreciated the conversation between Avery and her mother in Chapter 12; it shed much needed light on their mother’s life.
I disliked how everything was wrapped up neatly in the epilogue. I also really disliked how permissive Avery was of Lucky’s (presumably new) recovery, indicating additional relapse between the end of Chapter 12 and the Epilogue. While I love a supportive family, that story line completely neglects the realistic drain of frequent relapses and subsequent recovery attempts on the loved ones of an addict - emotionally, mentally, and sometimes physically. I also felt Nicky’s character was very surface-level, not nearly as complex as her sisters. It would have been nice to see more depth for her. Finally, ‘Blue Sisters’ didn’t touch me or make me emotional, which I think was Mellors’s intent.
Recommend!
