I have read the Hobbit a number of times, and did a re-read (listen) in preparation for a Lord of the Rings Read along.

This narrated version by Andy Serkis was phenomenal. His association with Middle Earth aside, Serkis is a fantastic narrator. Not just a master of voices, he puts fantastic emotion into the story.

Regarding the Hobbit in general, it is the book that I first remember falling in love with. While originally written more for children, it is a classic tale, and adults and kids alike would enjoy it.

Regarding its relation to Lord of the Rings, it was originally written in a stand alone fashion, however after its publication, it was edited to align more closely with the Lord of the Rings. Specifically, the chapter with Gollum was altered to make it more clear that the ring was, in fact, the one ring. It is not essential to anyone who would want to read the Lord of the Rings, as the key information is covered in that story. However, it is a great introduction to the world of Middle Earth, allowing us to meet some of the characters and learn more of the world and its history. it is also a great way to ease in to Tolkien's writing style. If you are not used to more "traditional" writing, or classic epic fantasy, this will help you get used to it all and give you an easy orientation.
