When a libel conviction leaves his career in tatters, journalist Mikael Blomkvist accepts an offer from reclusive industrialist Henrik Vanger to leave Stockholm and head north to Hedestad, Sweden. The purpose of the offer is, under cover of writing a family chronicle, to solve the 36-year-old case of who murdered Vanger's grandniece, Harriet. The compensation is a ridiculous amount of money and the promise of ammunition that can be used against the man who had Blomkvist convicted in the first place. What Mikael discovers is far more terrifying and deep-reaching than he could ever have fathomed.

Lisbeth Salander is a 24-year-old girl with a questionable past. Her violent temper has left her a ward of the state. But her unerring eye for detail has made her one of the most respected investigators in Dragan Armansky's employ. One such job, to investigate the life and the conviction of Mikael Blomkvist piqued her interest so much that, even though the job was canceled, she continued prying. Then, one day, she receives a visitor.

At first, I was concerned with how much detail was given in this book. I became afraid I was going to be drowned in minutiae and not be able to enjoy the book at all. Then, as I kept reading, I realized that not a single detail provided by Stieg Larsson was wasted. Everything was necessary to keep this highly detailed plot moving forward. And I loved it. One thing I discovered, though, that bothered me was that the original Swedish-language versions of this novel came with maps that showed the layout of the fictional Hedestad and Hedeby Island in Sweden. Considering I found myself looking through Google Maps for layouts of the area (before discovering they were fictional), I really would have liked to have those maps available to me. But it's a small detail in an otherwise fascinating read.
