Sadly, I was disappointed with this novel.  The author is a gifted writer, but she goes on and on in her descriptions and internal monologues.  This was the first in this mystery series, which has gone on to great popularity, so perhaps she refines her craft in later novels.  This is a very grim and sordid story.  The suspense and mystery of the plot were secondary to the characters.  Unfortunately, I found all of these elements severely lacking.
