Her Royal Highness
by Rachel Hawkins
Texan Millie has been mad about both geology and Scotland for a long time. After a split from her best friend who she had feelings for, Millie wins a scholarship to a boarding school in the Highlands of Scotland, which has taught the children of the Scottish royal family.
At school Millie meets Princess Flora, finding her obnoxiously difficult. Gradually their enmity changes to respect, then more.
I really like the fact that this emphasises the crush and the romance without focusing on sex. Both Millie and Flora are lovely people, only Flora has had to build a false persona to hide behind. We see the hard Flora, the glossy person for public consumption, but we also catch glimpses of the Flora that Millie sees, full of insecurities.
A really lovely story. If only we could have seen more after they make up, could see more of Millie adapting to Flora’s life, and Flora meeting Millie’s friends and family.
