Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston

Wow. And I mean that in the most meaningful way possible.

My experience reading this book can be summed up by the status update where I said: *CHAOTIC SCREAMING*
Which is just to say this book is really good.

One of the first things that stood out to me was the sense of wonder the author has created. Both the world itself and how it's described make you want to be there. I haven't genuinely felt "I need to live in this book" so hard in a long time, and it's such a great feeling to have again.

Our MC Amari's characterization is really strong too. As a reader, it was very easy to connect and empathize with her, and from the beginning I was completely rooting for her success. That connection made all the plot points hit so much harder. A lot of the side characters were great as well! Many of them had levels of nuance, which I appreciated.

The plot was fast-paced and exciting, likely due to a combination of good writing and the fact that this kind of story is automatically a win for me. In my opinion, it's hard to go wrong with tournament style plotlines. There were scenes where I found myself getting fired up like I was in the story, that's how invested I was.

Speaking of which, it's impossible for me to discuss how invested I was without mentioning the ending. I felt a lot of emotions during that whole part, and it was definitely a trip.
Especially the pain.

Overall, I'm happy I got so sucked into this story the way I did. It made the experience even more unforgettable, and for that I have to say this book very much deserves a place among my favorites.
