Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

5.0

Becky Albertalli does. not. disappoint. Everything she writes is pure genius and I am damn proud to be supporting her. I have been ridiculously excited about the release of this book and couldn’t be any happier now that it’s out and having read it.
To start off, as a lesbian, it was so refreshing to see healthy f/f representation, especially from one of my favorite authors. And as much as this is Leah’s story, all of our favorites from Simon vs. are still very much apart of this book which I LOVE. We get a lot more insight on the personal lives of the characters we fell in love with in book #1 and we find out what everyone is up to a year later! Which, I don’t know about you guys, but I was really curious to know how everyone’s relationships and friendships grew/changed after reading Simon vs. so this book is PERFECT. You get all the answers!!!
I missed the whole gang so much and this book definitely gave me my fix. And now I’m missing them all over again.
Getting inside Leah’s head was definitely a fun experience. Some of the paragraphs I read I had to stop and laugh at because they were just way too accurate. Becky absolutely NAILED what it’s ultimately like to be a teenager finishing up high school and all of the terrifying things that come with that transition. (Not to mention she got all of the fanfic references spot on. Brownie points for you, Becky.)
This book felt so raw and personal and I found myself relating to a lot of it which is a surreal thing as a reader. If you’ve read Simon vs., this needs to be on your to-read list. This is one of those books that a lot of people can and will benefit from and I highly recommend it.
