The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan
2.0
Is very obvious right from the get-go that this is a ripoff of Lord of the Rings. I feel like the list of differences would be shorter than the list of directly copied plot points, and the list of improvements would be even shorter.
I would like to say that there are more female characters in the Eye of the World, but now that I think of it, both have exactly three female characters of significance. The women in the Eye of the World are definitely more substantial, but male characters still take the central position.
What else did I like? I liked Perrin's incomplete journey of becoming a wolf man, which I assume will continue in other novels. I liked the hints of the much more complicated world that I'm sure will be revealed in future novels. I liked how feisty Egwene was. Mat's descent into paranoia and madness was satisfyingly irritating.
