Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant?
by Roz Chast
Inspired by a member of my book group, I opted to try a new style of writing for a subject I read about a lot -- graphic novel meets end-of-life planning book. As an estate planner I read a good number of books about American's end-of-life concerns. This was a fresh approach, but also a lite approach.
All in all, I enjoyed the read finding it to move far faster than most books on this subject. The drawings were fine, but did not do much to help me absorb the material. I did find her sketches at the end to be the most moving.
Overall I found the book to gloss over topics too much. Chast writes that her parents always resisted working with an elder law attorney, they simply would not talk about death. Yet somehow an attorney was hired and drafted the proper papers. How did she convince them?
If you are curious about issues you may face if you are ushering your elderly family into their 90s, this is a good introduction to the challenges you may face. If you are looking for solid ideas on how to navigate those challenges, this is not the book for you.
I do think this book fueled my interest in trying other graphic novels though. I'll be looking for suggestions.
