He Who Drowned the World
by Shelley Parker-Chan
I read The Radiant Emperor duology in nine days, and when I finally finished, I did nothing but sit and think about this story for 24 hours. At the end of those 24 hours, I opened book 1 back up, and started again.
So now that I’ve read them both twice, I can confirm that 5 stars is the rightful rating of this incredible, heartbreaking adventure! This is a story about love, loss, and above all, self. It is a scathing critique of masculinity, and a complicated love story. It is about desire, shame, and suffering, the intersections of choice and fate.
I am forever changed by these books. I find myself stopping in my everyday life to think about Zhu’s unshakable belief—I’m strong enough to bear anything—as she (he/they??) chooses her fate with an almost Nietzschean cheerfulness, again and again.
I cannot wait to see what Shelley Parker-Chan writes next—I will watch their career from here on out with GREAT interest.
