4.5

This was a wonderful literary/historical fiction novel that touches upon harbored prejudice, latent racism and the lives of others.

It's a carefully woven and thoughtful story which highlights human natures best intentions and biggest failings.

A criminal investigation into the death of the town's bully slowly introduces us to the citizens of Black Earth County. Each character is deeply flawed either physically or emotionally but they are all very well developed and real.

It doesn't take needless twists and turns and doesn't manufacture drama for the sake of it. Highly recommend this story to everyone looking for a new author or a new favorite.
