Character
but i still don't get how the ghosts -
just go with it!
i liked this :) a more contained story in a way than the other two of raina's novels i've read, it sprawls less in character complexities and relationships and more in setting, the foggy, ghost-drenched coastal town og bahia de la luna. the focus of the relationships is primarily cat and maya, with their parents' presents in the story more as plot catalyst and offshoots of this, and between the sisters and their new neighbor carlos. of those: the sisters shine the brightest, especially with the subtext of a root to cat's fear of ghosts is not just an aversion for horror, but fear for her chronically ill younger sister. and going back to setting, i love the way fog and wind and shadowy forests and bright parties full of ghosts are drawn, some of the most atmospheric and grand illustrations i've seen from raina yet! i left this story wanting a little more juice, but i enjoyed the read.
the process of creating a book is not unlike letting go of the things that haunt your past. making peace with your ghosts is as profound as the idea of life itself. and at the end of the day, love transcends life and death.
just go with it!
