Heart of Night and Fire by Nisha J. Tuli
3.0

I wanted to like this book desperately. It has a wide cast of BIPOC characters and representation and a rich and detailed fantasy world that honestly made me feel how vibrant and beautiful it was. That part was wonderfully written.

I just couldn’t get myself behind the characters. I did not like Zarya and it rubbed me the wrong way at times how angry she was. Even though it’s definitely justified but at times it felt like it was overdone? And then she was absolutely boy crazy. Any male who wasn’t someone she grew up with wanted her, at least in her head. And that was definitely not it for me.

Pair all of that with her having dark hidden magic and a man plaguing her dreams? It was an interesting concept that just fell flat for me character wise. I did continue the series because I had the second book already but I need to feel a connection to the characters and that just wasn’t here for me.
