I read this book to try to understand the hype around it.
There's something about the narration of females in all of the dark romance that I've read that I truly do not enjoy. There's this attitude of I know I'm walking into danger but oh well! Women who describe themselves as strong and try to act badass but submit to other peoples' whims with ease.
I was relieved that both Zade and Adeline recognize it's messed up that he spends his life liberating people from sex trafficking and turns around and tries to Stockholm Syndrome Adeline into loving him. This is just one bit of hypocrisy in this book. Adeline acts like she's a badass, but at the same time is crippled by social anxiety and it's hard to reconcile those two traits. I found the book to read like a Mary Sue fan fiction based on a show like Dexter.
I'm undecided on if I'll read the second since I didn't care for the writing style or the characters. But I also am happy to hate read books and I like conclusions.
