Kindred centers on Dana, a Black woman who has been transported back in time and space to the antebellum south because of her connection to a white boy named Rufus. The relationship between Dana and Rufus was complex, not only because of their metaphysical connection, but also because of their interpersonal relationship. A driving question throughout the book was: Can Rufus' relationship with Dana override the conditioning of his time and make him grow up to be less like his slaveholder father?

While their relationship was not standard for their time and the position Dana occupied was special due to the circumstances of her arrival, she was not able to avoid being subjected to the cruelty of being a Black woman in that time and place. By choosing to have Dana narrate the book, Butler acknowledges how people who did not exist during the time of slavery could never truly comprehend the violence Black people endured.

I was engaged during the entire book. It was filled with twists and turns without making light of Dana's situation. Two questions I kept asking myself were: How will Dana be able to stop returning to Rufus and stay in her time? If she finally makes it home for good, how will she be changed by the experience?

Kindred
is an imaginative story that is executed to perfection, making it an undeniable classic.
