Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi

5.0

THIS BOOK TOTALLY STOLE MY HEART.

When I heard about Uncle Rick's new imprint, I was so happy I wanted to hunt him down to hug him for his brilliance. I grew up with mythology and when I started reading Uncle Rick's books, I fell more in love with mythology. Now, here's an imprint which aims to showcase mythology from different countries and cultures and I just wanted to read Aru Shah (the first book in the imprint) so bad. I'm familiar with Indian myth but it's just so vast that the myths are blurry in my brain. The thing about books based on mythology is you can have fun while reading and you can also learn. Trust me, once you're done with this book you will love Indian mythology and you won't get enough of Aru Shah's adventures.

To fit in, Aru Shah favored lies instead of the truth and pretended to have a life very different from her own. Her life changed when she decided to light up the mysterious lamp from their museum just to show-off to her three classmates. Lighting the lamp was definitely a mistake because Aru accidentally unleashed the Sleeper—a demon who can bring about the end of Time itself. Now it is up to Aru and her Pandava sibling so save the world. This can be a very difficult feat because she never knew she was a reincarnation of a demigod destined to fight demons and end Armageddon. Will Aru Shah be able to fight the Sleeper and learn the truth about herself?

So yeah. I definitely loved Aru, Mini and Boo! They are such adorable and funny creatures and I liked them immediately. Chokshi established Indian myth in a very funny and entertaining way reminiscent of Rick Riordan's witty humor. I am especially happy of the fact that Mini is half Filipino. I have read hundreds of books but I haven't come across a character with Filipino blood. It's amazing how much Chokshi knows about Filipino culture too and my Filipino blood hummed every time I read something about the Philippines. Because Mini has Filipino blood, I immediately felt a bond with her. Of course, Aru is very lovable too. She is a girl with a very creative mind and without her cunning ideas, they might have not survived. I LOVE SMART AND WITTY CHARACTERS. It's refreshing to understand that wit is just as important as fighting prowess (proud daughter of Athena here!). And then there's Boo. OH I LOVE BOO. Despite his dark past, he has a heart of a marshmallow and cares so much for the girls. I love it everytime he poops on demons to distract them. BOO IS MY NEW SPIRIT ANIMAL.

Aru Shah and the End of Time is a gripping tale based from Indian Mythology. It is the type of book that will never let you go once you've read the opening line. You will surely learn a lot of things and will laugh like crazy because of the witty dialogues. This is definitely one of my most favorite reads of the year (so far). I CAN'T WAIT FOR BOOK TWO ASDFKGLDHSJ.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE OTHER BOOKS FROM RICK RIORDAN PRESENTS TOO. My nerdy brain craves mythology so much it needs to be fed frequently. Thank you Uncle Rick for finding ways to feed my brain. It's wonderful to meet new tales of godly dysfunctional families, treachery, adorable demigods, annoying demons, and more. MYTHOLOGY ROCKS.
