"Freedom is not a destination. It's a communal journey. May it heal you... May it lead you back to you."

yes ok I cried and what about it

This book would have ROCKED MY WORLD when I was in high school or even my first year of college. Even now, after continously doing the work to decolonize my life and way of thinking, there were parts of this that challenged me. I'm so grateful that accessible books like this exist for brown girls.

Some parts of this resonated so deeply. From the very beginning about having our hearts first broken by our fathers, to the part about how academia damaged Prisca's relationship with her mami, I felt so seen. And there were lessons here that I wished I could have learned from this book instead of learning the hard way.

The part about how Jane Austen and William Shakespeare are writers that get to be relatable to everyone while Sandra Cisneros is considered niche,,,, yeah ik it's obvious but why have I never thought about that
