City of Glass
by Paul Auster
This metafictional essay is delightfully thought-provoking. The story is less important than the idea, although the ideas are well-communicated because of the narrative. The basic gist of the book is experimentation in "breaking the 4th wall" to the extreme by involving the author as a character in the book, as well as blurring the lines between the characters themselves, who are all in fact different versions of the same person (or are they?). I really appreciated how many references to other literary works were in here as well, the story of how Don Quixote being particularly informing. Douglas Hofstadter would be proud of this one.
