3.5

I read another Ana Haung book and I got the same mediocre writing and story I always expect, nothing surprising here.

Okay this made it sound like I despised this one but I didn't, it was lovely, enjoyable, and it was different from her other romances in some aspects.

Characters:

Xavier: Seeing a bear every time I read a chapter in this man's pov was peak alpha male writing. Just beautiful. Jokes aside, he's cool, far more laid back than all those protective tough guy mmcs Ana Huang loves to write. He's funny (sometimes) and his story was interesting (kinda), and he hates nonfiction books, it was interesting to see him go from a "hedonistic degenerate" to someone with an actual life, a business, and a passion.

Sloane: Love her, what a  great fmc, she's also the most unique fmc, a woman with seemingly no feelings, always keeping her feelings behind a mask which has been the central point of her trauma, it's relatable in a way, as I felt like I would've related more to her years ago, except I didn't get a hot billionaire to feel something. Overall I liked her, loved how strong and unapologetic she is.

Romance:

The romance was sweet, the chemistry between them was done right and they felt perfect for eachother, I liked how the book took the time to build up their trust instead of rushing them to get into bed with eachother.

Writing:

The writing stays the same, basic, nothing special really with some writing mistakes and repeated jokes from across her other books, the humor is either cringe or just right, I found myself either wanting gouge my eyes or laughing, no in-between.

Xavier is Colombian and I was worried the corny Spanish would be consistent throughout the book but thankfully that didn't happen often, I don't think I would've enjoyed having "pequeño toro" mentioned more than three times.

The promoting for King of Envy is strong in this book is strong but then I remember Vuk is a guy with scars on his face, refuses to talk, so very tough, and seems to be connected to the mafia which is something I'm not interested in reading at all.

My favourite part:

The fight that kicked off the third act breakup was a little exaggerated but seeing Sloane face her fear of being hurt by someone who has too much power over her heart and Xavier's fear of messing up something perfect because he ruins all good, the scene of the Empire State Building was the sweetest and my favourite of the book for sure, it made me tear up, Sloane thinking Xavier changed his mind, sobbing, him coming back for her, the reunion, the confronting, and their kiss🥹

Overall:

This could've been written better but I still enjoyed it, it was sweet, I was invested in the characters and their stories, it was a classic Ana Haung book, nothing more nothing less.

Unfortunately I'm not interested in the concept of King of Envy but I'm considering reading King of Greed.
