The Selection
by Kiera Cass
Ok, I get it, dystopian trilogies are the trend in YA fiction these days. I also understand that I am trying to fill the void left by the ending of Harry Potter (Hunger Games, you served me well). I was intrigued by this book after reading a review of it online, though I was admittedly skeptical. Dystopian Bachelor? Seems a bit nutso. I'll stand corrected though. This was a quick and easy read, but it was interesting. It plays off the caste system of long ago, where everyone falls into a number -- Ones are Royalty and Eights are homeless running the streets. There is a girl who is a Five (the caste of Musicians and Artists) who is in love with a Six (the Servants) at the time of the Selection -- when girls from across the land are brought to the castle to date the Prince. The story unfolds as she discovers more about herself and what she wants in life and what she never dreamed could be possible. I enjoyed the book and I look forward to the next one! I want to see where this story goes...
