While I am appreciative of my time with The Dark Forest, in particular its intriguing social and political concepts, it’s a noticeable weaker “novel” than its predecessor. Gone is the broader mystery and thriller structure to its narrative, and in its place is some truly stretched out plot lines that, while interesting, are paced sluggishly. I think there’s a much better experience overall to be found here if some of the excess was trimmed off.
