Heartless
by Marissa Meyer
Alice in Wonderland has always been my favorite fairy tale, along side Beauty and The Beast. The whimsical impossibility of it always appealed to me as a child and has carried over into my adult life. There's so many retelling of Alice and her ventures (which I will continue to enjoy) but you never really hear anything of the Queen of Hearts. At least not about before she became Queen. That being said, when I heard this book was coming out I was ecstatic.
This book truly captured Lewis Carroll's style of writing. You couldn't look too deeply in things or the fun of the book would be ruined. This is truly a book you have to sit back and let consume you or else, I feel as though, you aren't getting the full experience. Marissa Meyer did such a good job capturing the characters and the world that when I now try and think of the Queen of Hearts, I can't help but think that this was her canon origin story. It seems so... true? I don't know quite how to describe it.
Going into this book I expected for it to be sad considering it shows a young girl's descent into madness. However, I was still taken by surprise at how heartbreaking it was to watch that descent happen over time. The book moved slowly, but that was alright in this situation considering everything was so whimsical that there was always something to be wowed by. I would recommend this book to fans of the tale Alice in Wonderland and those who are not. This is such a different story within the fantastical world that I feel could appeal to a wide range of people. Overall, the story was clever and I look forward to reading more of Marissa Meyer's stories.
