This book is extremely unlike but equally bizarre as its predecessor, Annihilation. Something ghastly and dreadful- or is it gleaming yet mysterious?- lurks beneath the surface- or is it on the surface? is it an illusion? a conspiracy? a physical, biological reality? I found this book captivating and brilliant, but I see that many other readers despise the crumbling corporate setting and complete lack of clarity surrounding the plot, characters, or any semblance of an answer to the question "what the HELL is going on here?" Any answers the reader is given only serve to shine additional light on the terrible enigma at the crux of this book, like lighting a series of lanterns along a dank cavernous tunnel.
The first book in the series, Annihilation, was a 4.5 star read for me. I also give this book 4.5 stars- but these books are a 5 star read as a pair. I hope the third book continues along this trajectory, intensifying the mystery without revealing it, lighting a few more lanterns without tripping a high beam pointed directly at the thing.
