A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

3.5

Okay listen. I liked most of this book considerably more than I enjoyed ACOTAR--I felt the plot was stronger & more engaging, the protagonist was much more interesting, and the cast of characters in this book was overall entertaining. I also was much more convinced of the chemistry related to the romance. However, I was once again disappointed with
the reveal of "fate" pushing together the romance. Why do Rhys and Feyre need to be categorically soulmates for their love to work? Man, I wish that didn't cheapen their love story for me as much as it does. I felt similarly cheapened when in ACOTAR it's revealed that Tamlin was looking for Feyre, or any human girl to fall in love with him really. And this book acknowledges Tamlin's opportunism, but fails to let Rhys and Feyre have a truly organic love story. Rhys even catalogues how long he's loved her, how much he's been preoccupied with her, THIS WHOLE TIME. Boooo, I was buying it full price before all that! For me, it ruins the entirety of their falling for each other, knowing he had already known they were "mates" and was basically waiting for her to realize and accept it. Sigh, good book but I doubt I'll be continuing the series now that I've felt some conclusion between Rhys and Feyre.
To be fair--qualms aside--I was so invested in the story with these characters I could not put it down and this is probably the fastest 600 pages I have ever read.
