1. Drive My Car: 3/5 stars
I don't know how I feel about this. It's in the middle. It's a story about a man who was deeply in love with his wife even though she has an affair with other men. He regretted that he had not summoned the courage to question the affairs when his wife was still alive. He was too afraid that he might lose her and so he kept quiet. After his wife's death from cancer, he befriended with one of the men who his wife had an affair with, to know the reason why she did it. But still, he got nothing.
2. Yesterday: 0/5 stars
This is a very weird story. I mean a guy named Kitaru literally just ask the main character to go out with his girlfriend because he thinks that the main character is a good guy. Who does that? Dude, she is not your property! You can't just give it to someone else.
3. An Independent Organ: 1/5 stars
This story is pretty dark. It shows how violently this doctor treated himself when the person that he loved doesn't love him back and uses him. The portrayed of loneliness and emptiness is pretty good here but for some reason, I'm wasn't really into the story. The part where he has this theory that women are born with a special ability to lie without feeling guilty was just weird and confusing. What makes him think that way?
4. Scheherazade: 1/5 stars
I have to admit that I was hooked by the story. But seriously stalking is downright creepy and not arousing.
5. Kino: 3/5 stars
I somehow liked this because it doesn't fully focus on the woman.
6. Samsa In Love: 0/5 stars
I'm disturbed by how he writes about people with disabilities. Just No!
7. Men Without Women: 1/5 stars
Up to this point, I seriously don't care what's going to happen now and I'm sorry that review is such a mess. Because I really don't care anymore. I'm glad that a few more pages I can finally throw this book out the window. Anyway, this story is basically about a man grieving about his ex-lover. I usually have a soft spot towards a book that deals with grief, but this, I can't even. I don't care!
Overall ratings:
(3+0+1+1+3+0+1)/7 = 1.3 stars
My first book by Murakami and I didn't enjoy it at all. I really didn't like the way he writes about women. It's sexist and boring! All the men here have no personalities. This may not be his best work but I'm seriously reconsidering my decision on whether to read his other books. Ugh!
Quotes that I like:
"There were times he thought it would have been far better to never have known. Yet he continued to return to his core principle: that, in every situation, knowledge was better than ignorance. However agonizing, it was necessary to confront the facts. Only through knowing could a person become strong."
"For no one knows what kind of dreams tomorrow will bring."
"Life is strange, isn’t it? You can be totally entranced by the glow of something one minute, be willing to sacrifice everything to make it yours, but then a little time passes, or your perspective changes a bit, and all of a sudden you’re shocked at how faded it appears."
“If you think of someone enough, you’re sure to meet them again.”
