Il nome della rosa by Umberto Eco

5.0

Not my best written review, but please bear with me, I'm very tired at the moment.

The mystery plot is as good as the best Sherlock Holmes, plot and characters are so well executed; so balanced that The Name of the Rose could appeal those who loves character driven books, as much as those who prefer plot driven books. The abbey is a world of its own, result of a world-building work that alone deserves all of the five stars. All of this with perfect historical depth and accuracy (at least as far as I'm concerned).
The dynamic between Adso and William is incredibly entertaining and they totally stole my heart.
The many accusations of pretentiousness are completely true, but when it's fitting... Why not embrace it?
I mean: you're reading a book set in a medieval abbey, famous for its library and in which the main occupation of the monks is to read and study and translate ancient texts. Exactly, what did you expect?
It might not be the easiest and most accessible book to read but it's far from being difficult, in my opinion.
