The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride
Did not finish book. Stopped at 30%.
It was taking way too long to figure out what the book was really about – – as in the point. And the journey during was so uncomfortable – racist and sexist, and just overall weird to follow – that I wasn’t having a good time.
I know the book is set in like the 30s, and language and culture was of course different back then. But overall the story is about this Jewish businessman trying to make a name for himself in the world and the first like 30% of the book spans like 10 years, where he’s becoming really successful. He finds a wife – and she used disabled, which becomes kind of important later
– whom he loves, which is nice, but also is trying to convince to leave her family home for several years.
By the time I stopped reading – because my hold expired on Libby – she’s dying and I assume this magical dancing man is coming to fix her? Honestly, I didn’t care.
This book definitely wasn’t for me.
