City of Bones by Michael Connelly

4.0

After watching five seasons of the TV show Bosch, I figured it was about time I picked up one of Michael Connelly's novels starring the detective. Watching the show first definitely gave me context as to the setting (Hollywood) and the characters, of course- but other things helped too- the chain of command, the layout of the precinct, and the all around feeling of Bosch's world. Seeing as how I'd already seen the show, I figured I could just jump in the series anywhere and not get lost, and I was right. These seem to be mostly contained stories, like an episode of CSI. If you like procedurals, cop shows or forensics, you'll love this series. Bosch himself is nothing original- he's a stubborn, nose to the grindstone cop who's served his country and is determined to see justice done, no matter what barriers need to be pushed or rules need to be broken.
This particular story, about bones being found and a twenty year old murder being solved- is also nothing new, to be sure. However, the story reads well. The leaps in logic make sense, the breadcrumbs laid out in such a way that the reader can follow along with Bosch, and we're never felt left in the dark. This is a well done, fast-paced mystery, and I had trouble putting it down. My only lament here is that the ending felt rushed, and left me feeling rather unsatisfied. Also, a warning for those readers coming here after watching the show: Bosch has no daughter in the books (at least not in this one) and Edgar, his partner, is completely different, which bothers me. Other than that, I had a good time, and I will certainly read another in the Bosch universe.
