The Consequences: Stories by Manuel Muñoz

3.0

This author is Mexican American and grew up in a small town in South Texas although most of these stories take place in Northern California. I was reading this book at the same time I was reading John Nichol’s Milagro Beanfield War and there is just no comparison. It’s not that Munoz’s short stories about Hispanic characters is bad, the descriptions are just very one dimensional and a little depressing. Nichols on the other hand made the leap to write a detailed of an Hispanic community that is based magical realism similar to Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The writing style of Munoz just can’t compete with that type of talent.
