Three years ago, Cee woke up on an abandoned island. She has only a rickety cabin by the sea, an android she built for company, and a single memory: Somewhere out at sea, she has a sister, and spends every waking minute building a boat so she can find her.

This is without a doubt my favourite 2021 release I've read so far. I was absolutely enamoured with Cee and Kasey, and found myself counting down the hours at work until I could get home, and dive back in. And it doesn't happen for me often, but I adored the romantic side of this one so much, I even shed a few tears towards the end.

Joan He weaved these two complicated storylines so effortlessly together. Showing us a glimpse of a world ravaged by climate change, with people dying from polluted seas and the contaminated air they breathe. With the sea levels rising, the only safe spaces are floating cities, where the chosen live in close proximity, but use virtual reality to pass the time. Then on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, we have Cee just living her day to day life stranded on an island, plotting ways to get to her sister.

This book is so frigging clever. Yes, I kind of guessed some of what was coming, but the full reveal towards the end absolutely blew my mind. Do I think this book will be for everyone? No. Especially if you're not a massive sci-fi fan, but if you love a strongly character driven narrative, and enjoyed the likes of Black Mirror and Lost, well you're in for a treat. The cover alone should sell you on this one, it definitely did me. I mean LOOK AT IT 😍
