The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt by Edmund Morris
4.0
I used to cite this (along with it's two sequels) as my favorite biography. When I first read it in 2013 I was blown away. After this reread I'm not even sure it's my favorite TR biography any more. It is a compelling read but it is more about the legend than the man.
It's too thorough to for the reader to escape the sense that TR was a sanctimonious, nationalistic warmongering imperialist, but it is mostly celebratory, even of TR's worst qualities. Still, TR the most interesting president, and though I would never vote for him I am fascinated by him. This is a very good book about the mythology that surrounds him and I'm not surprised I liked it so well the first time through.
I would still recommend this, but I'd probably recommend The Bully Pulpit by Doris Kearns Goodwin more.
