The Conditions of Will is a raw, emotionally layered novel that dives into family fractures, buried secrets, and the messy knots of grief and loyalty. Jessa Hastings writes with intensity, and Georgia’s voice carries the story with sharp vulnerability, but the experience can be frustrating at times — not because of the writing, but because several characters are almost unbearable in their self-righteousness and refusal to take accountability. That lack of growth makes parts of the book heavy and, at moments, exhausting, though perhaps that’s the point: some wounds don’t heal neatly, and some people never change. For me, it lands at a 3.75 — compelling, brave in its honesty, but uneven in how much patience it demands from the reader.
