Very possibly Tessa Hadley's best novel. Earlier this week I read that every novel is about whether life is worth living. I'm not sure that is true of every novel, but it is definitely true of this one. One evening 1967, a perfect but bored Phyllis Fischer makes a choice that changes her life completely and ripples through her family. Was she right or wrong, to upend the lives of so many other people in order to find her true self? The answer is ambiguous. The writing here is stellar and the characters are unforgettable.
