The Equality Illusion: The Truth about Women and Men Today by Kat Banyard

3.0

A decent summary of the various issues still facing women today and I liked the structure. However, the writing felt a bit stilted at times and there were quite a few occasions where some issue was described in quite a lot of detail and then just attributed to "sexism" without much by way of explanation. I agreed with her, but the links were by no means obvious and I think their explanation would be of far more value than detail given to the problem. This was particularly noticeable for me in the first chapter where a huge amount of description and first-hand accounts of eating disorders were given, but the reasoning linking this to sexism was distinctly lacking, in my opinion.

I think it suffered in my estimation by comparison with Laura Bates's Everyday Sexism, which I think was better written, but it would nonetheless be a good book to give someone claiming sexism is no longer a problem in the UK / Western society.
