The Nickel Boys
by Colson Whitehead
Well constructed historical fiction in the post-segregation Deep South. A reform school for boys that remains segregated despite the ruling of Brown v. Board, running the school like a prison, whipping and killing black boys. Whitehead puts together a great story, delivering staggering narrative twists with such frankness that they are doubly shocking. I felt I needed to go back and reread them, even though I know I read it right the first time. It was a great way of approaching the abundance of injustices occurring during this time period and this story, bringing such injustices to the present through his epilogue and acknowledgements page. Really great book. Love this author.
