This wasn’t nearly as strong as The Rise of Kyoshi, which is unfortunate as I was excited to dive into Yangchen’s stories. What I thought was going to be “The Dawn of Yangchen”, though, turned out to be “The Dawn of Kavik”. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciated the dual perspectives, but I didn’t feel nearly as connected to Yangchen as I wanted to. Perhaps the POVs were split evenly, but they sure didn’t feel like it. It felt like Yangchen took a backseat, which made no sense considering she’s the Avatar and the book is literally supposed to be primarily about her. I might not have minded as much if Kavik wasn’t such an annoyingly uninteresting character…

The conflict was passably interesting and reading about another airbender was definitely fun, but again, I didn’t enjoy this as much as I thought I would. Maybe the second book is better, so maybe I’ll give that one a chance at some point.
