Kiva is Zalindov's healer, where she has been a prisoner for years. Life inside the prison is far from comfortable and many do not survive. A new prisoner arrives and she is forced to welcome them to the fold. Kiva traditionally secludes herself from attachments in Zalindov, but upon this new prisoner's arrival she is confronted with many new decisions and conflicts to overcome.

It took me a bit to become invested into Kiva's story, as the beginning chapters are about introducing the characters and setting. However, I found myself wanting to see what would come of the plot and Kiva's character arch. The pace quickens as the plot becomes more relevant and less repetitive. Once the climax hit, it was full throttle ahead. I couldn't put the book down. I am excited to read the sequel and recommend this for any YA reader that enjoys a strong female MC and found family trope.
