Transcendent Kingdom is a near perfect sophomore novel. Yaa Gyasi has a remarkable talent for drawing readers into the lives of characters and using those characters to illuminate universal themes. In her debut, Homecoming is one of my top novels ever. I was a little nervous for Transcendent Kingdom - second novels are tricky, especially when the debut novel was such perfection. I needn’t have worried. This novel, while very different, is just as powerful as Homegoing.
