I thought there were a lot of flaws in this book, particularly with character development and the plot line involving Jake. I just didn't feel that the characters of Beth and Xavier were very complex or dynamic and I had a hard time being convinced of their supposedly deep connection. If someone were to ask me, "where's the evidence that they have a deep, meaningful relationship?" I would reply, "hmmm... well they say they do, repeatedly, but that doesn't necessarily prove it. She revealed that she was an angel to him, which represents intimacy, and he keeps her secret, which shows that they can trust each other, but for how important to the story their love is, there is actually very little evidence that it's truly deep and meaningful." And as for the character of Jake, when he was first introduced, he was sexy and dark and I was expecting him to be an exciting plot twist, but he turned out to be a disappointment. He was not subtle at all. It was way too obvious that he was a demon (the snake tattoo), and because of the lack of subtly, there was no mystery to his character, which I thought ruined it. It also made Beth seem stupid that she didn't notice. Also, he became significantly less sexy when he tried forcing himself on Beth. It would have been way sexier and made a better story if she was attracted to him. Of course, then there would have been the risk of it becoming just another love triangle, but the character of Beth might have been more interesting if she had more internal conflict. Overall, the plot was too predictable and the characters were underdeveloped, but it was okay.
