it had been a while since i read a Neal Stephenson book...i tried to read Anathem and the some of the Baroque Cycle, but could not make it through. it is clear that Mr. Stephenson has reached the same level as Stephen King and Michael Crichton (in his later years) where he is now far too popular and powerful for an editor to exercise any form of control on the product. fortunately in Stephenson's case, the end result is still quite readable, but long. Reamde was published in 2011 and is truly prophetic when it comes to politics, terrorism, online gaming, internet security, international relations, cybersecurity, and many other things. in this respect, the author is an unmatched prognosticator of the near future. however, it's like every single thing that he found interesting was introduced into the narrative, resulting in a sequence of 10-20 page essays on fascinating topics. Stephenson is such a good writer that he made it work, but the book could have been even better with a bit of weight loss. in any case, highly recommended for everyone, especially tech nerds.
