A Soul to Heal by Opal Reyne
2.0

Let me preface this by saying that I love love love Magnar (I also very much loved A Soul to Keep. I gave it 5 stars, in fact). So, with that out of the way... I really did not enjoy this book because I found the fmc to be deeply unlikeable. This isn’t an indictment on the author, however, or the quality of the book as a whole-- because this world continues to be extremely well presented and fleshed out, and the writing is still good and nicely polished (although this book kinda feels a little too long). I just really disliked this fmc and spent the entire book feeling like she simply did not deserve or appreciate Magnar (and lil Fyodor). The more I read, the more I disliked her. Everything with Delora felt like 1 step forward, 15 steps backwards. Everything was like pulling teeth. There was zero character growth for her, and thus, she just remained a shallow person with crappy motives, a chronic case of self-absorption, and at times, a seriously disturbing lack of empathy. That being said, I kept reading because I wanted all the extra Orpheus & Reia content + all the exposition and new information we got in this book about the demons/veil/witch owl/other duskwalkers/etc. I did end up skimming quite a few parts (really Quite A Few, I was close to DNFing many times tbh) because, again, I just found Delora to be so very annoying. I'm sad that I just don't feel like Magnar got the love that he deserves, but alas, it is what it is. Onto book #3 because I still want to keep going with this series, of course!
