dude.
I WANTED TO LIKE THIS SO BAD!!! single mom and a nyc photographer woman?? sign me up, im ready and waiting (that’s what she said) but unfortunately the book was done so overhanded and i did not feel any chemistry with the two leads.
delilah (or as i kept reading her name, delia) was a character that had a lot of room for growth; her mom died when she was baby and then her dad died when she was ten, leaving her with her stepmom and sister who treat her like she’s a burden for most of her life. i’m nyc she’s living her queer starving artist lifestyle i til she gets a gig taking photos for her stepsisters wedding where she meets claire, a single mom with a co parent who has been flaky in the past and hasn’t had a romantic partner in years. the two meet in a bar, book book.
the writing was so showy that it took me out. i’m not asking for some literary work of art but it kept getting knocked over my head how attractive delilah was which made me cringe. so. bad. LIKE IVE SEEN THE COVWR I KNOW!! STOP HITTING IT OVER THE HEAD. every time i had to read “she smirked” or “she was so hot” I LOST TEN YEARS OFF MY LIFESPAN!! delilah and claire had no chemistry and i could not see why they were attracted, no, to say IN LOVE, with each other. their relationship evolution was all over the damn place and i did not understand how their relationship went from “just sex” to “i love this woman; she’s my person”. HOW?? you pulled ONE immature prank on ur bestie and sisters andrew tate looking ass fiancé and now ur obsessed?? it felt unnatural and shallow and since this was a romance book it made it all fall flat for me.
the author used language i could tell she only used to be surface level progressive and it made me again. cringe. all. the. way. home. YES LESBAINS ARE ATTRACTED TO NON MEN WHICH INCLUDES ENBYS BUT IF I HAVE TO READ ANOTHER GODDAMN SENTENCES THAT REDUCES ENBY LESBIANS TO FEM PRESENTING PPL AND DOESNT UNDERSTAND THE BINARY I WILL PULL AN ASTRID AND GO UNCOMMUNICATIVE. also describing only a person of colors race before their name but only have white people as the main cast is kinda crazy, but i have no place to speak.
when describing delilah’s photos it was so funny. cuz it’d be like “it was a picture of a leaf in a birdbath. it’s so dEeP and rEaL because it represents lOnLiNeSs and dEpReSsIoN” give me a break💀 I WAS FIGHTING THE CRINGE OFF WITH A STICK. instead of TELLING me what a piece of art represents instead SHOW me delilah’s process as an artist that would then help me connect WITH her. god.
claire was just there, her storyline was SO intersecting she was just so bland😭😭 idk dude.
also my hot take is i didn’t rlly like any of the characters except astrid🖐️🖐️🖐️ i would read her book but idk if i can sit through the writing again man😭 im kinda going ham rn but i did enjoy some parts. delilah and astrid relationship fight? banger.(the way it was resolved much less so). astrid and her issues with her mom? banger. delilah’s hair routine? banger. but it was not much else to make me enjoy all of it.
i’m tired; it’s 11 PM and i wanna go to bad but i had to finish this book so i could be DONE WITH THIS SHIT. might take this review down, may not. bottom line, a big disappointment for me and everything felt so forced so that i just didn’t buy into what this book was telling me. rlly sad about it but oh well onwards we go.
i’m goinf to bed
