Born in Fire by K.F. Breene

3.0

This intro into the DDVN universe was much more entertaining than Penny's in [b:Natural Witch|36691913|Natural Witch (Magical Mayhem #1)|K.F. Breene|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1512064053s/36691913.jpg|58488967]. Penny's coddled child/adulthood didn't make her a very endearing protagonist and I found her to be overall very annoying. Reagan, on the other hand, is a watered down version of Kate Daniels. She's hiding her true nature/magical capabilities to avoid a certain someone, she is incredibly skilled with her sword, she has great magical talents, and she's a merc. She's basically Kate Daniels, but not as well done.

Breene has a habit of not having her characters curse, but instead of using normal words, they use weird substitutes. Instead of it being unique to a character, everyone seems to curse like Penny (only Penny does it more often). Breene also doesn't seem very good at building up relationships. It's almost a love at first sight scenario. Where Ilona Andrews did a great build up of Kate's relationship with Curran (it took 3 friggin books), Breene shoved it into book 1 where Darius had the hots for her and was in no way secretive about it. They might have had decent chemistry, but I could have done with more build up. Also, Reagan's true nature wasn't hidden very well.
